Coroner ID's boater recovered at Shawnee Lake

The man who died in an apparent boating accident Tuesday was a resident of the Shawnee Lake community who loved to fish and helped maintain the property.

An autopsy is scheduled today for 64-year-old James Redway Jr., according to the The Greene County Coroner's Office

The Ohio Department Of Watercraft is investigating this incident. Authorities are still working to determine what exactly happened.

Redway's body was recovered from the lake Tuesday afternoon near a boat dock by North Lakeshore Drive, a few yards from his truck and trailer.

Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer said it appears to be an accidental death.

The search started at approximately 11:30 a.m. and continued into the afternoon as a dive team worked from a raft. The Ohio Highway Patrol deployed a helicopter as well.

Early reports indicated a resident who lives on North Lakeshore Drive heard calls for help from the area of a boat ramp.

Responders reported that they spotted an empty boat drifting on the lake. Pete Dodge, who lives on the lake, said the victim also lives on the lake and does maintenance work on the property.

"Heck of a nice guy," Dodge told News Center 7's Layron Livingston. "He likes to do a lot of fishing."

The victim was not wearing a life jacket.

"Hypothermia. Could that kick in? Absolutely. Could the person have a heart problem? Absolutely. Could he have slipped and hit his head on something? That's what the autopsy's for," the sheriff said.
