Coronavirus: Schools work with students to take pressure off final grades

DAYTON — As summer break approaches, schools are working with students to finish the school year and keep students’ grades up.

Tonight starting at 5, Anchor James Brown investigates the long-term effect Covid-19 may have on our kids’ education.

“We’ve been able to accommodate all of our families, some of which we have sent chrome books home with, and others we have had to send wifi hotspots, so we are entirely online for grades K through 12," explained Andrea Cook.

Andrea Cook is the assistant superintendent of instruction for Springboro schools.

Springboro shut down at the end of 3rd quarter for the stay-at-home order. The district changed how they would grade the fourth quarter grades because students will be online.

“That is a local decision,” explained Cook. “So local school districts in Ohio have the option to decide how student grades are going to graded whether that’s a pass/fail, numeric, or a letter grade.”

Springboro decided to go with a pass or fail grading system. If a student passes, they get a 100 percent on their report card, and if they fail, they will get a 59 percent.

There is an exception for honors and AP students will be 105 or 110 percent if they pass.

This grading system is only in place for the fourth quarter.

:It’s a quarter of the entire year for the grade, so a student who was struggling but may have been able to find that nice balance with home learning, this may really be able to help him or her," explained Scott Marshall.

Marshall is the district communications coordinator for Springboro schools. He says the school’s focus is seeing students succeed.

“If you can find the nice balance where students can continue to learn and grow without the stress of a demanding school schedule, that’s something we want to provide, we are here to help,” said Marshall.

According to Centerville City School’s Community Relations specialist Sarah Swan, For fourth quarter, Centerville Schools will be using pass/not assessed for students in primary and elementary school and pass/incomplete for middle school students. Centerville High School is using its normal grading practices and grading scale.

The grading system is up to the individual school district.
