Coronavirus: Additional $600 per week of unemployment benefits should begin to arrive this week

OHIO — By the end of this week, Ohioans should start to see the additional $600 per week that is being allotted under the Federal CARES Act for unemployment, said Kimberly Hall, the director of Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.

“Those are for those who are currently receiving unemployment insurance benefits to receive an additional $600 per week on top of their original allotment,” Hall said. “We can begin flowing those dollars in addition to expanding our call center efforts.”

The additional money is being provided as a result of the federal CARES Act, which is the same bill that provided the stimulus checks that many Americans started to see in the last few weeks.

The money will be retroactively paid from March 29 through present, the state said.

“The $600 weekly unemployment compensation boost included in the CARES Act will provide valuable support to American workers and their families during this challenging time,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia.

The additional benefit will be taxable and taxes should be taken out based on whether you elected to have taxes taken out of your unemployment benefits on your unemployment application, according to the legislation.
