The report stated a family member was concerned their mother had stopped taking her mental health medication, abandoned her apartment and the children stopped going to school, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service in Northern Ohio.

Canton Police worked with the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. State Department to recover the children.

Investigators say they initially tracked the children to Denver, Colorado, then London, England, then to an island in the English Channel and finally to a remote fishing village in Iceland.

Icelandic police eventually caught up with the children at a hotel in Reykjavik. The children were placed in the care of Icelandic social services until they could reunite with a family member, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Investigators say their mother will remain in the hospital until she is well enough to travel back to the United States.

“The collaboration of effort in this case can’t be understated. The ability to respond and recover these children abroad is an extremely difficult task. Our investigators did an outstanding job. We are lucky to have such strong and dedicated law enforcement partners and credit should be given to them for helping bring these children home,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said about the operation to recover the children.
