UPDATE: 5-year-old expected to survive after being hit by vehicle

DAYTON — A 5-year-old boy who was critically hurt after being hit by a vehicle in Dayton Wednesday afternoon is expected to survive, police said in an update Thursday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to the 2800 block of Revels Avenue just before 4:20 p.m. after a 911 caller said a child had been hit by a car, according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch records.

Witnesses told police that children were playing in the vehicle when it “accidentally went into gear.” That’s when witnesses said the boy jumped out of the vehicle and was hit by it.

The 911 caller said a mechanic was working on the vehicle at the time. The caller said the boy had sustained injuries to the head and leg.

Police said two witnesses rushed to help and attempted to hold the vehicle back to stop it from hitting the boy.

“Two heroic people saw this happen and they tried to hold that car back, a 4,000 pound vehicle. They did the best they could to keep that vehicle from striking this child again. Without them doing the best they could, this could have been catastrophic,” Sgt. Creigee Coleman, Dayton Police Department, said.

The boy was transported to Dayton Children’s Hospital, according to dispatch records.

Crews were on scene and had the scene blocked off with police tape for nearly two hours on Wednesday. Detectives were called to the scene.

The crash is under investigation. Colemans said it was too soon to say if anyone would face charges.
