DAYTON — We can now put a name to the two newest faces at Carillon Historical Park.

In February, a storm knocked down eagles Orv and Willa’s nest which had their first egg of the year in it. The eagles wasted no time getting to work rebuilding and then laid two more eggs, which hatched 32 days ago.

Now, Carillon Park officials have officially named them. The one who flies first will be named Kittyhawk and the second one will be named Skye.

The names are non-gender specific because, at this age, the only way to figure out an eagle’s gender is with a blood test.

“Until this point, we’ve been saying ‘it’ or ‘them’ and that’s just too impersonal for you because you do build a relationship, a pseudo-relationship, with the birds. It may be a bit one-sided on our part, but you want to call them by something other than ‘thing one’ and ‘thing two,’” Jim Weller, Carillon Park eagle expert, said.

Weller told News Center 7′s Molly Koweek that he expects the eaglets to fly for the first time in mid-June.
