Motorcycle rider dies after crash during Enduro race in Darke County

DARKE COUNTY — UPDATE @ 8:10 p.m.

One person has died after crashing a motorcycle near a wooded area by the intersection of Wildcat Road and Palestine Union City Road Sunday afternoon, according to a release from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

Steven L. Vollmar, 48, of West Unity, died at Miami Valley Hospital after hitting a tree while competing in an Enduro Race.

Initial investigations found he was driving a 2017 Red Beta motorcycle during the incident and other riders came to Vollmar’s aid in the short period of time after the accident.

Vollmar was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

INITIAL REPORT:

CareFlight is responding to a dirt bike crash at the intersection of Palestine Union City Road and Wildcat Road.

Reports indicate that the driver of the bike crashed into the woods and is unconscious.

The extent of the driver’s injuries is unknown at this time.

Careflight is taking the driver to Miami Valley Hospital.

The crash was reported around 11:50 a.m.
