Caller claims to be from Social Security to obtain personal data

DAYTON — A caller claiming to be from Social Security attempted to obtain personal information from an area man, according to a Dayton police report.

Officers responded to West Third Street around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a phone scam.

The complainant reported that the caller said there was a glitch in the computer system and that they needed the victim's Social Security, bank account and bank account routing numbers.

The called reportedly also said the complainant would receive paperwork in the mail that he needed to fill out and return.

The complainant gave the caller his Social Security number, but questioned why the Social Security Office would be open on Independence Day, according to the report.

He asked to speak to the caller's boss, but due to a bad connection he was unable to hear the caller's response.

The complainant received the call on his home phone and did not recognize the number, but noted that it did not show up as blocked or unknown, according to the report.
