Bradford man’s bond set after 1-year-old dies of suspected abuse

BRADFORD — A Bradford man facing a murder charge after deputies arrested him Wednesday morning for the suspected abuse of a 1-year-old will need $1 million to get out of jail.

Joshua Mize, 30, was arrested around 9:30 a.m. by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office after a brief manhunt, Miami County Sheriff Dave Duchak said.

Miami County Sheriff’s Office records show deputies responded to Mize’s home on East Vine Street in Bradford around 6:15 p.m. Monday for an unresponsive 1-year-old child. The child, identified as Caelyn Colon, was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital and died on Tuesday, deputies said.

“My daughter isn’t breathing,” a woman told 911 dispatchers. “My boyfriend just called me.”

The woman, who was driving to the East Vine Street address, said her boyfriend called her and told her that her daughter wasn’t breathing and then hung up on her.

Duchak said “a criminal investigation was initiated by Miami County Sheriff’s detectives due to doctors concluding that the injuries present on the child were suspected abuse.”

Mize had a plea of not guilty entered during his arraignment before Magistrate Gary Zuhl Thursday.

He was on active parole stemming from May this year, Duchak said.
