Betty, the dog that survived being shot in the head, has died

JACKSON TWP., Preble County — Betty the lab has died after surviving nearly seven months after she was shot in the head in February.

Earlier that month, Betty, having been wounded by gunfire, turned up on the front porch of a farmhouse near New Paris.

Surgeons decided to close the wound and because of the invasive nature of removing the slug, decided not to put the dog through that procedure.

In addition to treating the gunshot wound, vets discovered a possible cancerous mass on the dog’s lung. The plan was to close the wound, aggressively treat the infection and keep her comfortable, vets said.

In June, the mass in her lung began to grow rapidly and Betty’s foster mom, Tracy Kim, told News Center 7 they were making the most of the time Betty had left.

Wednesday morning, Betty’s foster family made the hard decision of putting her down.

“I wanted to let you know that Betty passed this morning. It was a fabulous 7 months and I will miss her terribly," Kim told News Center 7′s John Bedell.

“She was really struggling to breath and was coughing uncontrollably.”

Kim said she will always remember Betty as her protector.

“She was the perfect dog and followed me around to protect me," the woman said. "I will miss her terribly. Thank you for making her famous. She deserved it.”
