SPRINGFIELD — The Catholic Central at Springfield High School boys basketball game ended early on Saturday night after an altercation between two athletes and a separate incident between fans outside of the building.

The Springfield City School District and Catholic Central issued a joint statement on the incident saying “the competitive nature of the game led to a brief altercation when two athletes attempted to secure a loose ball.”

A separate incident between adult fans also occurred outside of the gymnasium preceding the incident on the court.

“After both coaches restored player order and the identified adult fans were removed from the building, it was determined best for all to stop play at the end of the third quarter,” the statement said.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) confirmed it was made aware of the incident.

OHSAA said that the penalty for being ejected for fighting is a four-game suspension and that there is an appeal process.

“While this incident was unfortunate, the Wildcat and Fighting Irish teams will continue to support each other and look forward to friendly competition in seasons to come,” the school districts said.
