Playground equipment destroyed by fire in Huber Heights; police review surveillance video

HUBER HEIGHTS — Huber Heights police were reviewing surveillance video Thursday from cameras near Community Park to see if they captured any of the people police said caught the playground equipment on fire Wednesday.

Three people are believed to have set fire to the playground equipment and anyone with information is asked to contact Huber Heights Police.

Firefighters and police responded to the park around 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a mulch fire that had spread to the playground equipment.

“These three kids were sitting right there right before it started. One kid I saw running toward the back of Studebaker…the other two just followed. Then I look back and I see this thing on fire,” a 911 caller said. “It’s smoking, it’s bad. It’s on fire. I see the fire.”

According to a release, police searched the area for the suspects but were unable to locate them.

Huber Heights Police said the equipment is a total loss.

The Ohio Blue Ribbon Award Committee is providing a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads police to who set the fire.

A dollar amount for the damage was not immediately available.
