Alligators spotted in river in Auglaize County; 1 still on the loose

AUGLAIZE COUNTY — An alligator is on the loose in Auglaize County.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture was notified May 7 of two alligators in the St. Mary’s River, a spokesperson for the agency confirmed with News Center 7.

“At this time, one of the alligators has been killed by local law enforcement,” the spokesperson said. “One remaining alligator has not been seen since the initial incident.”

According to the spokesperson, the remaining gator submerged itself under water during initial attempts to capture the animal.

“They can remain under water and swim away; thus we are relying on local enforcement to report sightings,” the spokesperson said.

ODA has not received any new reports of sightings.

News Center 7 will continue updating this story as we learn more.
