All three Carillon Park eaglets fly the nest

DAYTON — The Carillon Park eagles nest was getting a little crowded, so the babies decided to take their first flights.

“Every year we wait for this time when the baby eagles get ready to spread their wings and take that first step over the nest. I call it a step into freedom,” eagle expert Jim Weller said.

The first of the juveniles fledged on Sunday. The next took the leap the following day. The final bird flew for the first time Wednesday.

“Now that we’ve had all three fly the nest, they’ve got that first flight under their wing and that’s a big thing,” Weller said.

He explained, Aviator, Navigator, and Pilot will spend the next few months improving their flying capabilities, learning how to find food, and gaining independence.

They will fly off on their own for good in August or September, as parents Orv and Willa’s other offspring have done in years past.
