Afghan refugees coming to Ohio headed to Cleveland

MIAMI VALLEY — Thousands of Afghan people are fleeing their country as the Taliban has taken over as the United States moves forward with plans to withdrawal from the country.

News Center 7 wanted to know where those people might end up if they come to the United States.

Mike Lehner, spokesman for Catholic Social Services, said Cleveland would be the primary resettlement site in Ohio for Afghans with special immigrant visas.

Catholic Social Services is the official refugee resettlement agency in the Miami Valley.

Lehner said the people who would be resettling here in Ohio are people who worked for the U.S. military in Afghanistan.

However, the situation is changing daily and some of the Afghans could be sent to the Miami Valley in the future, Lehner said.
