Police said an investigation revealed the teens attempted to rob a person of their vehicle prior to the crash.

“The citizen did not comply and the suspects fled the scene towards Airway Road,” police said. “The citizen followed the suspect vehicle in an attempt to obtain the vehicle license plate. Suspects in the vehicle then fired multiple shots at the citizen who was not struck.”

The two vehicles eventually crashed.

Two teens were thrown from the car in the crash and a third was taken to the hospital, where he later died. A fourth juvenile was located by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Security Forces.

The car the teens were in had been reported stolen out of Dayton, police said. An incident log showed

Several people called 911 to report both the shooting and the crash.

“It sounded like someone yelling someone’s name and a car sped off,” one caller said. “In the next 15 or 20 minutes I heard more loud popping sounds. I don’t know if it’s a gun or not.”

Another caller said she saw both cars involved pass her.

“I just passed an SUV and a car and as soon as they passed me, I heard gunshots,” she told dispatchers.

A third caller told police about the crash he saw outside his home.

“There’s a really bad car accident,” he said. “I see two vehicles. I think they hit a tree.”
