“We simply cannot execute the marathon in a manner where the safety and security of our runners, volunteers, staff, partners, and spectators is satisfactorily achieved,” explained Brandon Hough, Air Force Marathon director. “However, our team has worked hard to offer numerous options to registered participants to be as accommodating as possible.”

The decision comes after Air Force leadership, medical experts and event partners have met over the last two months to discuss options.

Registered participants can elect to participate virtually, gift the registration to an Airman for 2021 or deferring the race to a future year. Participants will be contacted by email with the necessary steps to take.

“We understand this will stir many emotions, and we want all our participants to understand this decision was truly one made with heavy hearts, but with the best intentions in mind for all involved,” organizers said. “These are challenging times for all of us, but with the support of our participants, volunteers, spectators, and partners, we are confident that we will return to the start line stronger than ever.”
