Video shows fight between girls in Butler HS cafeteria; District ‘disappointed’

VANDALIA — Video of a violent fight between two girls in a high school cafeteria has  flooded social media.

Vandalia-Butler school officials confirmed they are investigating the incident that took place Wednesday at school, and Superintendent Robert O’Leary said the district was “disappointed in the behavior of our students.”

News Center 7 has received numerous videos showing various angles of the brawl at Butler High School. All show that two high school girls are not just pushing and shoving. They are clawing at each other’s clothes and throwing punches in the middle of the cafeteria.

“I’ve just never seen anything like that back in the day,” said Joanne Amato, whose grandchildren attend Vandalia-Butler schools.

She noticed one thing she didn’t like as the girls fought.

“No one was seeming to want to help or do anything. They’re just sitting there at lunch,” Amato said.

School officials disputed that no one stepped in, saying: “the Butler High School safety officer quickly took action by responding to break up the fight.”

O’Leary said, “we do not tolerate this type of behavior and students will be processed accordingly.”
