James Brown’s Making a Difference: Tuesday afternoon at Bill’s Donuts

CENTERVILLE — Pastries and other baked delectables are not the only items made at Bill’s Donuts in Centerville.

On Tuesday afternoons, a group of women gather inside the restaurant at 268 N. Main St. and set to work on transforming plastic grocery bags into mats that can be used for bedding. The mats are then donated to the homeless.

WHIO’s James Brown recently visited with the group to tell their story about Making a Difference.

“This really gets the human touch. Because its made by hand,” said volunteer Louise Guglielmetti. “These are grocery bags i buy all my snacks and all products i take for granted. And this person is using it just to survive.”

It takes about 800 bags and 40 hours of work to crochet one mat. Over the past two years, the group at Bill’s Donuts has made about 200 mats.

” As people walk in the store and see us doing this, they know we’re working toward something good as opposed to all the bad things you see all the time,” said Owner Lisa Tucker. “These ladies have never met the people their mats ended up with ,,, They have never asked for thank you … or a pat on the back. They just want those less fortunate to know someone cares.”
