Father of stabbing victim questions officers’ actions leading up to his daughter’s death

SIDNEY — On Feb. 5, Brianna Wilson died after being stabbed multiple times inside the Sidney home she had been living in. Now, more than a month later, her father is questioning if officers did enough to prevent his daughter’s death.

Doug Wilson said his daughter called him on the afternoon of Feb. 5 to tell him police were at her home as Riley Barger was trying to break into the house. Barger, who Wilson said was Brianna’s cousin, had been staying with her, but she had kicked him out.

Wilson drove over to the home, but by the time he got there, he said his daughter was in grave condition from the stabbing. Brianna, 27, died at Wilson Health minutes later.

“I’m like how’s that possible? She was just with police officers,” Wilson said.

Wilson said that his daughter died eight minutes after the last officer cleared that scene. Now, he’s arguing that the officers cleared the scene before it was safe to.

“I think she’d definitely be alive. Both of them may be in trouble but it never would have escalated to this,” Wilson said.

On Tuesday, Wilson showed News Center 7′s Sean Cudahy surveillance footage that he claims is from the day his daughter was killed. The footage was from a neighbor’s camera and shows officers on scene when things were a bit chaotic between two people, who Wilson claimed was his daughter and Barger.

The footage showed officers leaving the scene after talking with the two people on the video. Wilson said it was after they left that Barger stabbed his daughter inside the home.

Barger, 20, was later taken into custody and charged with voluntary manslaughter.

Police have not confirmed the video, but Sidney’s Police Chief told News Center 7 that they “reviewed the case” and “determined the officer’s actions were appropriate.” Further comment could not be given as the case is still active.
