Boy, 2, with burn in relative’s care during Springfield police probe

A 2-year-old boy who suffered a burn to his back has been removed from his home and placed with a relative by Springfield police pending the investigation, police said.

The boy was treated and released on Saturday from Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Police are investigating a possible child abuse case after a 2-year-old boy with a burn injury showed up this afternoon at a local hospital.

The boy’s mother and grandmother brought the child around 3 or 4 p.m. to Springfield Regional Medical Center, where police were called to investigate.

The child suffered an injury on his back caused by a household item at the Ronez Manor Apartments, said Sgt. Jerome Montico.

No arrests have been made and it’s under investigation when the injury happened, how it happened, who was with the child and whether it was accidental or intentional, the sergeant said.

The severity of the boy’s injury, and whether he remains hospitalized, was not released.
