Springfield mom gets 5 years in prison after baby’s skull fractured

SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield mom will spend five years in prison for child endangering for waiting to seek medical care for her injured baby.

  • Darrien Carter was accused of injuring her then 6 month old son in August, causing a skull fracture and brain bleeds, and then waiting to get medical help.
  • In January, Carter agreed to plead guilty to two counts of child endangering for waiting to seek medical care for her son.
  • The state will drop the felonious assault charge in exchange for Carter's guilty plea, Clark County Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Driscoll said.

Carter was sentenced during a Clark County Common Pleas Court hearing on Tuesday.

The sentencing hearing came less than a month after Carter pleaded guilty to a bill of information in a child abuse case against her.

In August, a Clark County grand jury approved charges against Carter.

She later pleaded guilty to a bill of Information for child endangering. Judge Douglas Rastatter accepted her plea and found her guilty.

Springfield police arrested Carter in August after her 4-month-old son suffered a skull fracture, three brain bleeds, two broken ribs and a broken leg.

The baby has had at least two procedures to relieve pressure and drain the blood from his brain at Dayton Children’s Hospital, according to court records.

There will be a pre-sentence investigation prior to the Feb. 21 sentencing date.

Carter was free on her own recognizance.
