Police: Registered sex offender had gun near daycare

Dayton police say a registered sex offender was arrested for having a gun near a daycare.

The Stepping Stones Learning Center was open when someone called police about a man walking with a silver gun in his pocket.

An official at the daycare said the man never entered their building and employees were not aware of any threat until after the arrest.

Police spotted the man on Burkhardt Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Officers say he told them he did not have a weapon and then ran. They found him hiding nearby under a van and located the weapon under another vehicle in the same driveway, according to a police report.

They identified him as Gregory Stansell, 31, the report states.

Stansell is in Montgomery County Jail on felony charges for obstruction, having weapons in a school zone and having weapons under disability.

He also faces misdemeanors carrying concealed weapon and possessing drug abuse instruments, according to jail records.

Officers say they also found a crack pipe in his pocket at the jail.

The gun was not loaded, the police report states.

According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Stansell is required to register as a sex offender for a crime involving a child.
