Police: No suspect in custody regarding fatal shooting at Dayton apartment complex

DAYTON — A person of interest was in custody after a Dayton man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in the parking lot in back of the Whitmore Arms Apartments. However, there’s no one in custody regarding the shooting at this time, police said Monday morning.

The victim was identified this evening as 27-year-old Tyree L. Mitchell of Dayton by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

He was found shot inside a white Ford car in a parking lot in back of the apartment complex at 4608 Midway Ave. at the corner of Midway and Almond avenues.

Sgt. Creigee Coleman said the victim was shot at least once in the upper torso area.

A man was seen taken away by police in handcuffs from the scene. Coleman confirmed a person of interest was in custody, but said so far no one had been charged.

Also, Coleman said there were three witnesses who were talking with police.

Police have not disclosed any information about why the victim was at the complex nor what led to the shooting.

FIRST REPORT:

Dayton police and medics were dispatched this afternoon to a report of a shooting.

According to initial reports, a male was shot, possibly in the head, inside a white car in a parking lot in the 4600 block of Midway Avenue. The 911 call came in at 12:07 p.m., Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center records show.
