Second shooting victim dies, 4th person charged in Bellefontaine homicide

Shooting victim, Anthony Scartz, has died as a result of his injuries Wednesday night when gunfire opened in a Bellefontaine home.

UPDATE @ 7:35 p.m. Nov. 29:

Police arrested a fourth person in connection to an exchange of gunfire during a robbery Wednesday night at a Bellefontaine house that wounded one man and killed another.

Austin Allen, 20, was arrested Friday for his involvement in the homicide and is charged with complicity to aggravated robbery, Bellefontaine Police Chief Brandon Standley said Friday night.

The chief said Allen, who is being held in the Logan County Jail, was with the three teens who previously were arrested in the double shooting.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man is still fighting for his life after he was wounded when Standley said three Urbana teens opened gunfire in a Bellefontaine home.

Anthony Scartz was shot multiple times and is in a Columbus hospital.

The boys arrested, ages 15, 16 and 17, are all in the Logan County Juvenile Detention Center.

EARLIER REPORT: (Nov. 28)

One of two men who survived a shooting in a Bellefontaine home late Wednesday night is in critical condition, Bellefontaine Police Chief Brandon Standley said Thanksgiving Day evening.

One of three juveniles accused in the homicide was wounded in an exchange of gunfire in the home, the chief said. That boy was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, where he is under police guard. His condition was not known tonight.

All three juveniles — ages 17, 16 and 15 — are in custody in the shooting in a home in the 600 block of West Columbus Avenue.

Caleb Chamberlin, 22, was killed and Anthony Scartz, 24, was wounded. Both were hit multiple times in the shooting that occurred about 11:35 p.m., the chief said in a statement released late Thursday afternoon.

Scartz is in critical condition at a Columbus hospital.

According to Bellefontaine police, here is what happened:

The three boys had been to the home before. One of them is believed to have known Chamberlin or Scartz. Witnesses told police a “violent encounter led to the discovery of the three’s identities.”

Two women at the house, presumably among the witnesses, were not hit in the gunfire but were treated for injuries.

The 15-year-old was shot several times during the encounter, police said, and the other two boys took him to Urbana, where they left him at Mercy Health Urbana. Hospital officials there called Urbana police to report the gunshot wound victim, as hospitals are legally bound to do.

The other two boys continued on to Madison County, where they were tracked down at a house by Madison County Sheriff’s deputies based on a tip to Urbana police.

The three boys eventually will be housed in the Logan County Juvenile Detention Center, Chief Standley said.

“The tragic and senseless shooting that occurred in our city last night was the result of three armed suspects that apparently were solely focused on committing violence when they entered 601 West Columbus Avenue,” Standley said in the statement.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Caleb Chamberlin who lost his life. We continue to hope for the quick recovery of Anthony Scartz who was shot multiple times during this incident but remains at a Columbus hospital,” the chief said.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is working with Bellefontaine police as the investigation continues.
