UPDATE @ Noon Sept. 17: Dayton police said David Gaines Sr. was shot twice in the torso outside his home on Huron Avenue last night.

He was pronounced dead at 3:36 a.m. today, according to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

Police said Gaines had visitors right before the shooting happened, and they were either involved in the shooting or know what happened.

UPDATE @ 9:49 a.m. Sept. 17: The Montgomery County Coroner said the shooting victim has died. He was identified as David L. Gaines Sr., 58.

UPDATE @ 11:35 p.m. Sept. 16: Police are asking for the public's help in locating a suspect in the Huron Avenue shooting.

Dayton Lt. Mark Ponichtera said the victim, a man believed to be in his 50s, was shot at least once. He was said to be in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital, where he was being taken into surgery.

Ponichtera would not say whether police think the victim was shot inside or outside the house, and it was not immediately clear whether the victim lives at the residence.

UPDATE @ 10:49 p.m.: Homicide detectives have arrived to investigate the shooting on Huron Avenue.

A Dayton police Crime Scene Investigation unit vehicle also is on scene.

Police have no statements about what happened.

FIRST REPORT: Police are on the scene of a shooting in the 800 block of Huron Avenue.

Crews were dispatched just before 10 p.m.

A medic unit has come and gone. There is clothing that has been strewn in a yard in front of the address.

Crime scene tape has been put up at the scene and officers are blocking traffic at Dandridge and Fairbanks avenues.
