Richmond schools shooting: Dennis Intermediate remains closed, counseling available for students

RICHMOND, Ind. — In the aftermath of Thursday’s shooting in which Brandon Clegg, 14, entered Dennis Intermediate with a gun and fatally shot himself after being cornered by police, the school will remain closed Tuesday, officials said.

However, mental health counseling will be available to students at the Richmond west side Boys and girls Club from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to a message on the Richmond Community Schools’ Facebook page. On Wednesday, Dennis students will report to the Richmond High School Tiernan Center for the day to participate in the previously scheduled end-of-semester activities.

Buses will run their normal routes, although parents can drop their kids off at the Tiernan Center, near the softball field, the message said, adding that pick-up and dismissal times will remain the same.

The incident occurred Thursday morning after Clegg’s mother called in a tip warning police about a “potential violent act” at Dennis Intermediate after the teen took another family member hostage and forced the family member to drive him to the school.

Dennis Intermediate already was on lock down and police were on the scene when Clegg arrived.

Clegg shot at a door to get into the school before exchanging gunfire with officers. He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
