Dayton Mall carjacking: Stripped, stolen Buick held evidence for analysis

MIAMI TWP. — The black Buick taken in last weekend in what police called a brazen carjacking at the Dayton Mall in Miami Twp. was found on Thanksgiving night — but not in the same condition it was stolen at gunpoint from an Englewood woman.

The black 2012 Buick Regal was found stripped and in the middle of the street at the intersection of Soldiers Home West Carrollton and Frytown roads in Jefferson Twp.

Now, evidence found may help lead detectives to a suspect or suspects, Miami Twp. police said.

Although police did not specify what evidence they uncovered, they said it was submitted to a crime lab for analysis. Also, detectives were pursuing all leads, according to a release.

INITIAL REPORT (8 p.m. Nov. 28):

It was only a frame with no motor, no doors and no hood, among parts removed from the car. It was left in the middle of the street at the intersection of Soldiers Home West Carrollton and Frytown roads in Jefferson Twp., a sergeant at the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center said

It also had tow straps connected, so deputies said it’s possible the car became detached during transport.

The car was taken at gunpoint around 1:40 p.m. Nov. 23 from the mall parking lot near the Macy’s entrance in Miami Twp. The car’s owner was not injured, but was shaken, Miami Twp. police public information officer Pat McCoy said last week.

She told police she was walking to her car when she dropped her purse as she was approached by a young man, according to police records.

“I went to pick it up, and he had a gun … I was scared he was going to shoot,” the woman said in a 911 call as she fought back tears. “He said if I don’t give the keys he’s going to shoot me … I gave him the keys.

“He showed me a gun. He pointed it at me. He said ‘hurry up.’”

McCoy said the carjacking, especially during daylight hours, is an anomaly.
