Coroner’s office IDs man shot to death in Dayton

UPDATE @ 8:30 p.m.: The young man shot to death near Salem and Auburn avenue is Dillon Ward, 25, according to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office. His address was not being released, according to an official with the office.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday to determine the preliminary cause and manner of death.

Friday evening, Dayton homicide Detective Sgt. Richard Blommel said several people have been interviewed but no arrest has been made.

Earlier, at the scene, Sgt. Creigee Coleman said witnesses told police the shooting may have involved an argument. The people police interviewed turned themselves in, shortly after the incident, at another location in the city.

People in a barber shop and beauty salon on Salem Avenue said they heard the gunshots. Dayton medic units tried to save the man, but could not.

Police are trying to determine whether a crash involving a third location, this on Ravenwood and Auburn avenues — is connected to the shooting.

Friday’s shooting is believed to be the 25th in the city this year. The police department is asking the public to remain vigilant.

“If you saw something, say something because this type of violence has to stop in our city,” Coleman said. “We cannot continue to allow this. You’re only going to help yourself out so the city we live in can become safer.”

UPDATE @ 3:32 p.m.: Moments after the shooting, a neighbor called 9-1-1.

“I’m looking … right now. Somebody is lying on the ground dead, they are dead,” the caller said frantically.

The caller told the dispatcher that a person driving a gray Monte Carlo fled immediately after the shooting. Also, four people stood over the body before police arrived, the caller said.

In addition, there was an altercation among two groups believed to be relatives of the victim and the alleged shooter. Dayton police separated the groups.
