ODJFS reported 18,639 initial applications were received last week, which is up nearly 4 percent from those who requested the previous week. This marks the third week in a row of increased initial unemployment applications, with around 17,900 requesting first-time benefits the previous week.

Continued claims were down from the previous week, falling below 300,000 applications. Those claims have continued on a downward trend the previous weeks, but were down only a fraction from the previous week, around 0.7 percent.

The total number of applications remains historically high with over 318,000 applications received, which is over 639 percent higher than this time in 2019.

In the last 29 weeks over 1.7 million jobless claims have been filed, which is more than the combined total of the previous four years combined. During the same 29 week time period, over $6.9 billion in unemployment compensation have been distributed to over 817,000 Ohioans.
