Dayton Flyers win A-10 women’s tournament title, NCAA auto-bid

They always say “it’s not how you start, but how you finish,” and the Dayton Flyers are living proof.

After losing seven of their first twelve games, the Dayton Women’s Basketball Team closed the season with 20 wins in the last 21 games including a 52-48 win over VCU in the Atlantic 10 Championship game Sunday at the U.D. Arena.

Dayton took a seven point lead with seven minutes to play against the Rams and the Flyers didn’t make another basket. The did knock down seven out of eight free throws down the stretch to win the title for the second time in three years.

“These guys just once again found a way,” Flyers head coach Shauna Green said during the post game celebration.

“Sometimes I don’t know how they do it but they find a way to win and they made stops when they had to…words can’t do it justice as to how proud I am of this group.”

Senior Jayla Scaife was named the tournament MVP with 13 points in her final game on the U.D. Arena floor.

“It feels amazing to be able to come back here,” Scaife said. “We won it our freshman year, and to be able to go out on a championship is a great feeling.”

The win punches a ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the Flyers. They will find out the details during the Selection Show on Monday, March 16.
