Basswood Avenue shooting: Neighbor says it’s ‘a drug-infested environment and I don't like it at all’

UPDATE @ 7:15 p.m.:

Jamell Dion Coleman was found dead inside an apartment early Sunday morning, along with a male who was wounded and taken to a hospital.

"I didn't think anything about it because I thought it was like fireworks but it was in such close proximity," said a neighbor. Once she heard two more gunshots, she thought of protecting her family.

The cause of the shooting is still unknown, but neighbors say the area has a drug problem. "This is a drug-infested environment and I don't like it at all," said a neighbor.

UPDATE @ 11:06 a.m.:

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has confirmed 44-year-old Jamell Dion Coleman was found dead in an apartment complex in Basswood Avenue early Sunday morning.

Police have not released any information regarding suspects.

UPDATE @4:33 a.m.:

A male gunshot victim in his early 40s was found deceased inside a residence on Basswood Avenue early Sunday morning, Dayton Police Sergeant Thomas Schloss confirmed.

Another male victim of the same age has been taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

At 2:41 a.m., police were dispatched to 2606 Riverside Drive and found the first victim on the corner of Basswood and Riverside Dr. with gunshots to the arm. Police then found the deceased victim inside a residence at 222 Basswood Ave.

It is unknown at this time if any suspects have been named.

Sgt. Schloss confirmed an investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE @ 3:40 a.m.: 

One person has been taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries in a shooting that occurred in the 200 block of Basswood Avenue Sunday morning.

Dayton police are still on the scene and have blocked off the area with yellow tape.

Initial reports indicated another victim may have been involved but this has not yet been confirmed.

FIRST REPORT:

We are hearing reports of a shooting in the 200 block of Basswood Avenue possibly involving two victims.

Police and medics were dispatched to the scene at approximately 2:41 a.m.

We are on our way to the area and will update this story as more details become available.
