Abnormally warm Christmas for the Miami Valley

This Christmas brings abnormally warm weather to the Miami Valley, with sunshine and highs in the mid-50s — but it’s been much warmer in the past.

Since 1893 there has only been 13 years with temperatures in the 50s on Christmas. The most recent was 2015, when we were in the mid-50s on Christmas Day.

The current record high temperature is 65 degrees set in 1893.

The lowest Christmas temperature is minus 13 degrees, recorded in 1983. On this day, the high temperature was minus 1 degree.

The record for the most snow on Dec. 25 in Dayton is 5.2 inches.

There’s typically a white Christmas — characterized by an inch of snow on the ground Christmas morning — once every four years.
