Man accused of fatally stabbing girlfriend when she asked him to get milk for kids indicted on murder charges

DAYTON — A man accused of fatally stabbing a woman family members said he had been dating was indicted today on murder and felonious assault charges.

Eric Humphries, 38, was indicted on two counts of murder and two counts of felonious assault. He remains in the Montgomery County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Amber Smith was found dead inside a house in the first block of North Smithville Road around 4 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Her three-year-old and one-year-old children were inside at the time, according to a release from the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

Humphries is accused of killing Smith after becoming angry when the victim asked if he could get milk for the children. He is accused of taking a knife from the kitchen and stabbing her multiple times, killing her, according to the prosecutor’s office.

“I need an ambulance ASAP, I don’t know if she’s stabbed or what. There’s blood everywhere,” a 911 caller told police.

“It was one of those situations where she just fell in love with the wrong dude,” said Kirtis Miller, Smith’s brother.

Miller said the two had been dating about five years and he’d occasionally seen red flags.

“I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, like maybe it will work out, maybe she gets fed up and leaves him,” Miller said.
