Hangar, airplane at Lakefield Airport in Celina destroyed in afternoon storm

CELINA — A hangar and a Cessna 150 airplane were destroyed in a storm that hit Lakefield Airport in Celina on Thursday afternoon.

Wind rolled the roof of the four-airplane hangar into a ball before taking it off in the storm, airport Manager Steve Shinabery said Thursday night.

The three other planes in the hangar were not damaged, he said, and no one was injured.

In addition to the hangar that was destroyed, there are as many as four large hangars at the airport that hold multiple aircraft, plus a maintenance hangar that can handle eight airplanes, Shinabery said.

In total, he said there are about 30 airplanes, all privately owned, at the facility in Mercer County.

Shinabery said he was not able to estimate the dollar loss but said an insurance adjuster would be visiting soon to assess the damage.
