Dave Chappelle’s pop-up shows will go on - with conditions, zoning board says

MIAMI TWP., Greene County — Complaints about noise, language and trash aside, humorist Dave Chappelle’s outdoor pop-up shows near Yellow Springs will continue, the Miami Twp. board of zoning appeals decided Thursday night.

Several residents addressed the board about those issues at a virtual meeting.

Chappelle has been hosting comedy shows in a field in Miami Twp. Zoning Inspector Richard Zopf said he was never notified about the shows, which he said had become an issue because Chappelle and friends have been using agricultural land for commercial use.

When the permit was issued, Zopf said it was supposed to be for personal use. So, the fact there have been hundreds of people at the series of shows, titled “Dave Chappelle & Friends: A Talk with Punchlines” since early June -- held every week multiple times a week -- has caused problems.

The board, after hearing from the public and re-convening in executive session, approved the variance Chappelle sought on two conditions: One, operators of the venue, Wirrig Pavilion, off U.S. 68 on property off Meredith Road, must make efforts to reduce the noise and two, the property owner meets with neighbors weekly.
