Coronavirus: How to take care of pets while working from home

Taking care of pets while balancing a workload can be a challenge, not only for you but for your pets.

News Center 7′s Kayla Courvell looked into the affect that working from home can have on your pets.

Kyle Hapner, a veterinarian at Northridge Animal Clinic, said that dogs will be most affected when their owners go back to work.

“When you go back to work, they’ll be going through a depression almost,” said Hapner. “Their people aren’t going to be home anymore.”

This is why it is crucial to set a routine now.

“It’s important to keep structure because in a couple months, your animals are going to go crazy when they go back to structure," said Hapner.

This could mean walking them during their normal walk time, or setting up a dog walker for when you go back to work.

If you crate train them, continue to do that for a few hours, even when you are home.

“I know it’s hard to say no to them, but ultimately they need to still have some similarity each day.” said Hapner.

According to Hapner, cats are experience increased stress now that their humans are home more.

“They’re having more issues with not wanting to use the litter box,” explained Hapner. “Being stressed out, because their normal nap time is being ruined by their owner being home.”

This means giving your cats space, even if it means staying in a single room for a few hours so the cats have some quiet time.
