Coronavirus: Doctor concerned about impact of virus on protests over George Floyd case

DAYTON — A Miami Valley Hospital doctor said he is worried about how large protests will affect the spread of the coronavirus.

“I think that’s something that has everybody a bit concerned,” said Dr. Roberto Colón, associate chief medical officer.

He said the facts that the demonstrations are outside and people are generally moving around help lower the risk.

“The best thing that we can do is making sure that we continue to observe those same social distancing guidelines,” Dr. Colón said.

“We just have to make sure that we continue to try to follow some of those guidelines as we take on all of these new demonstrations, this renewed interest in the community, being able to advocate for these causes.”

He suggested wearing a mask and bringing hand sanitizer to the protests.

Dr. Colón said it will probably be about two weeks until we know what kind of impact these protests will have on the spread of the virus.
