New alert for parents about baby sleepers

Dayton, OH — The Consumer Product Safety Commission is alerting parents and caregivers about the risk of suffocation from inclined sleepers for babies.

There are baby deaths associated with these products, according to a CPSC news release.

Inclined sleepers are bassinet-like devices which elevate a baby’s head and torso. They are often touted for prevention of acid-reflux or congestion.

To keep your baby safe, the CPSC said you should make sure your child is properly restrained and snugly secured in the sleeper, keep your baby’s face up and free of any breathing obstructions, and stop using the inclined sleeper when your child can roll over.

Parents should also take these steps to ensure a safe sleeping environment:

  • Bare is best.  Keep blankets, bumpers, stuffed animals and pillows out of cribs.
  • Back to sleep.  Put your infant to sleep on his/her back.

Always follow the instructions with any infant sleeping product and check CPSC.gov for any recalls.
