Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast: 70 Years of Weather at WHIO

WHIO TV is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Since the station hit the airwaves in 1949, its meteorologists have covered some impactful weather events throughout the Miami Valley.

In this week’s installment of Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast, Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini had the opportunity to ask Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs about a special project Vrydaghs worked on for the station’s anniversary.

During the conversation, Vrydaghs discusses some of WHIO’s iconic meteorologists, including Gil Whitney, as well as some of the impactful weather events that have occurred in the Miami Valley the past 70 years.

In addition, Vrydaghs talked to a man who shared his first-hand accounts of surviving the 1974  tornado in Xenia. Tornadoes aside, winter storms such as the Blizzard of 1978 buried the Miami Valley. Polar vortex outbreaks dropped temperatures to some of their lowest in decades, and even hurricanes have caused billions of dollars in damage.

Vrydaghs shared many other weather-related memories and statistics during the 70th anniversary special episode.
