DAYTON — A Community Blood Center mobile blood drive truck stolen Monday evening from the Dayton CBC loading dock has been recovered in Columbus, according to the blood center.

“It has been impounded. As of today, we are still trying to get confirmation on the impounding so we can arrange pick up,” Community Blood Center spokesman Mark Pompilio said. “Unfortunately, all contents of the truck are missing.  The most significant loss is of 12 portable donor beds.  Value of the key items exceeds approximately $30,000.

Surveillance video of the theft showed an unidentified person walking the length of the CBC building on Franklin St., entering the vehicle, and driving away.

Equipment stolen with the truck included portable donor beds, screening room apparatus, multiple crates of various blood drive equipment and blood resource literature.

The mobile unit is a box truck used for taking donor beds and other equipment to an indoor, mobile blood drive. The truck had just returned from an evening mobile event.

“We have been relying on equipment from the Dayton CBC Donation Center and training equipment to compensate for the loss,” Pompilio said. “The biggest issue was the vehicle.  To be without a replacement truck for an extended period would mean being forced to cancel or diminish upcoming mobiles when both blood drives and blood drives that included platelet and plasma collection equipment were scheduled on the same day.”

Pompilio said they have been able to maintain normal blood collections since the truck was stolen and they believe the vehicle will be drivable when they are able to pick it up in Columbus.

No information about who was responsible for the theft was available.
