6-year-old boy falls into fire pit at Clark County campground

HARMONY TWP., Clark County — A 6-year-old boy is recovering at Dayton Children’s Hospital after he fell into a fire pit Saturday afternoon at the Tomorrow’s Stars RV Resort.

The incident was reported just after 5:10 p.m. at the campground, 6716 E. National Road in Harmony Twp. near South Charleston.

News Center 7's Monica Castro spoke to the resort's manager, who also is a firefighter, about what happened that brought a CareFlight medical helicopter to the campsite.

“He was messing around and he accidentally fell backwards,” Darren Rambo, manager of Tomorrow’s Stars said. “He didn’t get burned from the fall. What burned him was the metal ring around it that was hot.”

Rambo was the first to respond to young boy after he was injured. He was alerted by a text messaging system the park has in place for emergencies.

“As soon as I got that text message, I went ahead and went over there to see what was going on,” he said.

The boy was burned around his calves.

He had been staying with his grandparents when the accident happened.

“When I was talking to the child he said that it did sting and things of that sort. I just talked to him and things to try and take his mind off it and calm him down,” Rambo said.

Gathering around a fire pit is a popular summertime activity, but Rambo urges guardians to keep an eye on the little ones. “Try to keep your kids at a distance from a fire. Make sure that they are safe.”

A medical helicopter was called Saturday to the Tomorrow’s Stars RV Resort after a 6-year-old boy reportedly fell into a fire pit.

The manager said he’s been overseeing the park for two years, and there hasn’t been an incident like that before.

The boy is expected to be OK.
