Sinclair Community College establishes Juneteenth as a college holiday

DAYTON — Sinclair Community College will now be closed on Jun. 19.

Sinclair Community College Board of Trustees announced that the college has established Juneteenth as an official college holiday.

According to the release, Sinclair has had a 310 percent increase in the number of degrees and certificates for African American males and a 250 percent increase for all minority students in the past ten years. The Board also invested an additional $1 million dollars to fight against racism through further programming and training in 2020.

“With nearly 6,300 minority students, and more than 4,600 Black students, Sinclair Community College is a crucial player in improving lives through education,” said Michael Carter, Senior Advisor to the President and Chief Diversity Officer – Sinclair Community College. “Sinclair remains steadfast in bringing about real, lasting, systemic change by ensuring that the future is much brighter for our Black and minority students and that our entire community has equitable opportunities.”

If Juneteenth falls on a weekend, Sinclair’s President will designate a day to during the week to observe the holiday, according to Sinclair’s release.

Sinclair will encourage students and staff to observe and commemorate the meaning of Juneteenth through special programming being offered by Sinclair.
