Longtime Dayton Municipal Court judge passes away

DAYTON — Retired Judge John S. Pickrel, who served the Dayton Municipal Court from 1984 to 2016, died Sunday.

Pickrel was appointed to the bench at the Dayton Municipal Court in 1984 by Gov. Richard Celeste. He first served as an administrative judge before becoming presiding judge from 1991 to 2016.

“The world lost an incredibly kind, loving, sincere, dedicated public servant and true friend this morning,” said Commissioner Debbie Lieberman in a Facebook post Sunday. “He was a champion for men and women with severe and persistent mental health illness.”

In 2013, Pickrel established the first mental health court in the Dayton area.

Visitation for Pickrel will be July 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Marker & Heller Funeral Home, 5844 Old Troy Pike. A private service will be held July 8 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 500 Belmonte Park North.
