Kettering police: Someone living in house when human remains were found

Human remains were discovered inside a Kettering home last month and the coroner’s office is still trying to determine the identification of the individual.

  • Relative of occupant discovered remains May 31
  • Coroner's office removed full adult male skeleton from home
  • Skeleton appears to have been in home for "years"

Police believe someone was living in the house in the 3000 block of Prentice Drive when the skeletal human remains were discovered in late May, Kettering police Capt. Daniel Gangwer said.

Gangwer said a relative of one of the occupants could not get an answer at the door May 31, checked a window and saw the remains.

The relative is related to another former occupant of the house and has not been able to help police or the coroner's office identify the remains.

A caller to 9-1-1 said her father, who had been extremely ill, was living at the house with a caregiver.

The woman said her husband looked in the window and saw her father and the skeletal remains in the house. The woman said she lives in another city.

The coroner’s office removed the remains of a full adult male skeleton from the home that appeared to have been inside the residence for “years,” said Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger.

Harshbarger said there did not appear to be any skeletal trauma to the remains and there were no indicators the death wasn’t natural, however deferred to Kettering police for further comment as the investigation is ongoing.

The coroner’s office is using a scientific identification process to help determine the identity of the man, the coroner’s office said.

The coroner’s office deals with around eight to 10 skeletal remains cases each year for the counties they perform autopsies, however a skeleton discovered inside a home is not a typical case for the office, Harshbarger said.

There has been no official cause or manner of death determined in the case.
