Hawaii thundersnow and chances for White Christmas in Dayton

As we get closer to Christmas snow is on everyone's mind.

Last weekend, it was the talk of the town on the Big Island in Hawaii. The Big Island summits once again got more snowfall. They were actually under a Winter Storm Warning through Monday morning.

A tweet sent from the National Weather Service in Honolulu showed that rangers on Mauna Kea had reported seeing heavy snowfall with thunder and lightning over the summits. That would classify as thundersnow.

Thundersnow is really special to see and even more unique to hear it was reported in Hawaii.

To bring it back to the Miami Valley, if you are dreaming of a "white" Christmas, statistically speaking, it isn't very likely.

A "white Christmas" is classified as having an inch or more of snow on the ground by Christmas morning. Since snow records began back in 1943, this only has happened 21 times which is about 29 percent. The last time Dayton had a white Christmas was 6 years ago in 2010 when two inches of snow had fallen.
