Gunman accused in hit-and-run heads to court this week for arraignment

A 39-year-old Dayton man is to be arraigned Thursday on several felony charges related to a January hit-and-run accident that left a juvenile on life support.

Michael Harrison is accused by a county grand jury of running over one juvenile in a field after firing at another juvenile at the All in One gas station on North James H. McGee Boulevard the morning of Jan. 26.

According to the indictment, returned Tuesday, the juvenile struck by the vehicle was running from the gas station where Harrison had been firing a gun.

A female approached the window at the gas station that morning. She had left her car running.

One of the two juveniles who approached her jumped into her car as Harrison arrived in a separate vehicle.

Harrison fired multiple times at the juvenile who was trying to back out of the gas station parking lot. Some of those shots hit a nearby house.

That's when the second juvenile took off running.

The charges against Harrison are as follows:

  • Felonious assault with a deadly weapon (2 counts)
  • Felonious assault causing serious harm (1 count)
  • Improper discharge of a firearm at or into a habitation (1 count)
  • Tampering with evidence - trying to alter or destroy it (3 counts)
  • Having a weapon as a felon stemming from a violent act (3 counts)
  • Having a weapon as a felon stemming from a drug conviction (1 count)

The firearm counts all carry repeat violent offender specifications, while six of the charges also carry three-year firearm specifications, according to county Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr.’s office.

We will update this story as developments occur.
