Dayton delegation taking initial steps in starting Liberia’s first public library

DAYTON — A delegation with Library for Africa is headed overseas today to take the first steps in building Liberia’s first public library.

It started when the Founder and CEO of Library for Africa, Veleta Jenkins, was an English teacher and learned from one of her Liberian students that his country had no public library.

Today, March 9, Jenkins is set to lead a delegation of Dayton area leaders to Liberia to begin the project.

They will start by meeting with local leaders there and the community’s children to get the library built.

“I know this for a fact. When that library is built, there will probably be a whole line of people wrapped around that library just beginning to get in, because they understand and they want that education so desperately,” Jenkins told News Center 7.

Library for Africa needs $350,000 to start phase one of the project. Visit libraryforafrica.org to learn more about how to donate.
