UPDATE @ 5:30 p.m.

An ice cream man who was killed after he slammed his van into a pole may have suffered a medical issue before the crash, police said.

Police and medics were called around 4:15 p.m. to the intersection of Gettysburg and Maywood avenues, which was blocked for about three hours as police investigated.

“They found a one-vehicle accident. An ice cream truck crashed near this pole behind me,” said Dayton police Sgt. Andrew Gillig. “One occupant, a 51-year-old male, was trapped.”

The driver was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sergeant said. His name was not released pending notification of family.

Gillig said the driver was headed north on Gettysburg Avenue, and that a witness said he had been swerving before the crash.
