City hopes for business boom from The Basketball Tournament at UD Arena

DAYTON — Red Scare, the University of Dayton alumni basketball team, will serve as the featured squad for one of the eight regionals in 64-team, single-elimination The Basketball Tournament (TBT) set to tip off July 16.

Red Scare will serve as the No. 3 seed in the Dayton Regional and is one of seven teams that will compete for the chance to advance, TBT officials announced Wednesday. The regional games will be played at UD Arena from July 24-27.

The championship is Tuesday night, Aug. 2.

Local businesses are joining the Red Scare roster and area basketball fans in looking forward to the $1 million, winner-take-all tournament.

“When we have the March Madness and high school basketball tournaments in March, we went from about five in her to about 100 people,” Jennabelle O’Malley, of Flannagan’s Pub, told News Center 7′s James Rider.

O’Malley said summer business can be slow with no students on campus and is hopeful for a boost in revenue and customers.

“Being that we’re so close to UD Arena down the street, we definitely get a lot of people coming straight from there,” she said. “We definitely get a lot of business when there are tournaments down there.”

The Dayton Convention and Visitor’s Bureau does not have an estimated economic impact because COVID 19 restricted attendance from last year’s tournament.

Red Scare’s first game is scheduled for Sunday, July 24, at 3 p.m. against the No. 6 seed CitiTeam. A Red Scare win will mean they’ll face the winner of the July 26 matchup featuring No. 2 seed Golden Eagles and No. 7 seed Ohio 1804, according to information released Wednesday. The Dayton Regional championship will be July 27 at 8 p.m.

Red Scare features several former Flyers including Jordan Sibert, Scoochie Smith, Vee Sanford, Josh Cunningham, Darrell Davis, Ryan Mikesell and Trey Landers. Former Flyer Joey Gruden will serve as head coach for the fourth straight year.

Tickets are on sale now for the TBT games in Dayton. For more TBT ticket information, visit this website or call the UD Arena Ticket Office at (937) 229-4433.
